Sri Lankan finance minister to visit India amid economic crisis

Sri Lankan Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa spoke over the phone with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar earlier today and they agreed to a visit by the former to New Delhi in the latter half of March.

This comes as Sri Lanka is embroiled in an acute economic crisis with its foreign exchange reserves depleting and external debt continuing to mount.

A shortage of fuel has also created protracted power cuts sparking protests in various parts of the country.

Sri Lanka relies excessively on foreign aid and India has been amongst the major sources of international assistance. It has extended $1.4 bn worth of aid since the start of 2022 in addition to another $1 bn which is currently being discussed, but not yet released.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
