Sri Lankan military orders former LTTE cadres to become informants

In the wake of the Easter Sunday blasts by Islamist extremist groups, the Sri Lankan military summoned over 50 former LTTE cadres in Jaffna and ordered them to provide intelligence.

The cadres were ordered to attend a meeting at the headquarters of the 512 Division in Jaffna yesterday. Many reported being warned by soldiers in white vans that they must attend.

Army officials told the former cadres to provide information on foreigners and new people moving to the local area, as well as any unusual activities.

The army told the cadres it was their responsibility to do this in order to safeguard the security of the Jaffna people.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
