The Sri Lankan military held a memorial service for the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF), a military contingent accused of committing widespread human rights abuses against Tamils, at a ceremony in Jaffna earlier this month to coincide with India’s Independence Day.
The Consul General of India in Jaffna S Balachandran was present at the ceremony, alongside several senior Sri Lankan military figures.
The IPKF are accused of perpetrating widespread atrocities while occupying the North-East during the disastrous 'peacekeeping' campaign between 1987 and 1990. The crimes they are accused of include the shelling of a hospital, several massacres, enforced disappearances and sexual violence.
