Saravanarajah, President Ranil Wickremesinghe, currently in Berlin, has instructed his Secretary, Saman Ekanayake, to launch an investigation into the matter. The judge, who presided over the controversial Kurunthurmalai temple case, cited receiving death threats as the primary reason for stepping down from his position and fleeing the country.
According to The Island newspaper, President's Secretary Saman Ekanayake engaged in discussions with Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles to delve into the circumstances surrounding Judge Saravanarajah's resignation. It has been claimed that the judge did not formally lodge any complaint regarding the alleged death threats before submitting his resignation.
The Kurunthurmalai temple case has been a source of intense pressure from the Sri Lankan government, and Judge Saravanarajah's decision to step down has raised concerns about the security and independence of judges in the North-East.
