Sri Lankan president pledges ‘highest sponsorship’ for Buddhist Renaissance Fund

Sri Lanka’s president Maithripala Sirisena stated that his government would ensure that “the highest sponsorship will be provided by the government to strengthen the Buddhasasana” at a Buddhist religious event at Tissamaharma on Saturday.

Mr Sirisena said that he “will work towards providing every facility to develop the religious education which is a timely need.”

He went on to state that the Buddhist Renaissance Fund by the Sri Lankan government would develop Buddhist temples and shrines.

“President said that the highest sponsorship will be provided by the government to strengthen the Buddhasasana, including developing temples, providing facilities for maintenance of the dignity of Buddhist monks, propagation of dhamma, and religious programs,” reported his official media website.

The Sri Lankan president has often reiterated his commitment towards developing Buddhism across the island, and earlier this year travelled to Jaffna to inaugurate a highly controversial 'teaching Buddhism in Tamil language' scheme.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
