Strong winds devastate Mullaitivu and Mannar

Strong gusts of wind damaged houses and destroyed the woods in multiple parts of the Tamil homeland throughout Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mullaitivu

In Mullaitivu district, 18 houses were destroyed by the winds including 13 temporary settlements and five permanent houses, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) revealed.

DMC reports said that among the 13 temporary settlements that were damaged, six houses were located in the Thunukkai Divisional Secretariat, five in Manthai East and one each in Oddusuddan and Puthukkudiyiruppu.

Two permanent houses each in Oddusuddan and Karaithuraipattu and one in Weli Oya (Manal Aru) divisional secretariat were damaged by the winds.

The destroyed 18 houses were occupied by 58 people whose lives have also been severely affected by the winds.

The winds also caused major damages to farmlands and trees in Mullaitivu. Several acres of banana and papaya plantations have also been affected.

Mannar

Assistant Director at the Mannar DMC Kanagaratnam Thileepan revealed that 59 people belonging to 16 families have been affected by the winds in the district.

“In addition to thirteen houses which were severely damaged, two shops have also been affected,” Thileepan said.

Five houses were affected in the Mannar Divisional Secretariat and Nanaddan Secretariat each, with two being damaged in Musali and one in Madu Divisional Secretariat.

One business establishment each was destroyed in Erukkalampiddy and Kokkupadayan village.

As in Mullaitivu, banana and papaya plantations were also damaged extensively in Mannar.

Thileepan said that the DMC is engaged in further disaster management activity in the district.

Fishermen villages in Mannar were particularly affected as strong winds caused sea water to enter their houses and some of their boats and fishing equipment were also washed away into the sea.
