Tamil civil society representatives in Mullaitivu met with UN human rights officials and discussed growing concerns in the district about systematic Sinhala colonisation and violations carried out by the Sri Lankan state under various wings, particularly the archaeology department.
The Tamil Heritage Council, a civil society organisation, said they had published a detailed report about Sinhala colonisation and land-grabs in the district and handed it over to the officials.
The UN delegation visited Mullaitivu on Wednesday and met with several local representatives, including families of the disappeared.
Tamil Heritage Council representative V Navaneethan said they had stressed that while attention was focused on Colombo’s political crisis, ongoing violations such as Sinhalisation and land-grabs in Mullaitivu, as well as the plight of families of the disappeared had been consistently ignored.
