Tamil government official dies after sustaining serious injuries in suspected attack

A local government official, known for speaking out against illegal activities, was attacked on his way home from work on Tuesday in Athimottai, Mannar. 

S Vijayanthiran,a government official of the Manthai West Divisional Secretariat, was rushed to Pallamadu hospital and later transferred to Mannar hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. 

Illuppaikkadavai police say he had sustained multiple injuries to his head and body and it is suspected that he may  have been attacked with a weapon by unknown individuals. His motorcycle and helmet were also found covered in blood.

Vijayanthiran known as Viji was known for speaking out against illegal activities including illegal sand mining taking place in the area.

Police said that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the death but investigations are underway.
