Tamil Thesiya Valvurimai Iyakkam in Mannar paid their tribute to the victims of Mullivaikkal today. They were joined by religious leaders, local council members and human rights activists.
The head of Tamil Thesiya Valvurimai Iyakkam, V S Sivakaran, led the memorial service by lighting candles and placing flowers to honour the fallen.
“Either by forced disappearance or by being killed many left this earth being subject to inhumane methods of killing, and many of their bodies were irretrievable as they had been dismantled and burned,” said Sivakaran.
“There souls would not have left this earth in peace, and for them, we will hold this two-minute silence to reflect on the lives that were lost," he added.
Tamil Thesiya Valvurimai Iyakkam joined the global movement of serving "kanji" to attendees at the end of the memorial service. Kanji (rice porridge) was the only meal eaten by Tamils towards the end of the war due to the heavy restrictions on food supplies.
