Sri Lankan terrorism police interrogated Tamil organisers of a memorial sports tournament this week.
A knock-out football tournament organised by ‘Agni Siragugal’ or ‘Wings of Fire’ has been taking place in the run-up to Mullivaikkaal remembrance day on May 18th. Sports clubs across the North-East have been participating.
On Thursday, the leader of the Wings of Fire organisation, Selvanayagam Ananthavarman was subject to investigation by Vavuniya Terrorism Investigation Department officers.
He was interrogated about how the tournament was being funded and whether the Tamil diaspora was involved. Mr Ananthavarman was also asked whether the teams would be lighting memorial flames at the tournament.
Similarly, the treasurer of the Kilinochchi district football league reported that he received an interrogatory telephone call from officers at the Joseph Camp in Vavuniya.
The treasurer said the TID officers said they would allow the tournament to carry on once they were convinced that there was no diaspora involvement.
