TNA MP, MA Sumanthiran, marching alongside protesters has released a statement highlighting the demands of demonstrators.
These include the release of Tamil political protesters, raising the salary of estate workers to a thousand rupees; and raising attention to the international community of Sri Lanka’s human rights abuses.
Tamils across the North-East are participating in a walk for justice from "‘Pottuvil to Polikandi" to demand that the United Nations and international community heed Tamil calls for justice and accountability.
The march has been endorsed by all Tamil political parties, as well as by Tamil and Muslim civil society organisations and Muslim leaders. The campaign has been met with a brutal crackdown from the Sri Lankan state, with troops and police disrupting and threatening marchers.
This follows statements in which he expressed solidarity with Muslims who have been subjected to a discriminatory policy forcing them to forsake their burial rites and forcibly cremate their deceased.
