UN agencies call for international assistance to Rohingya refugees

The United Nations called on the international community for massive assistance to help approximately 400,000 Muslims from Myanmar who fled to Bangladesh, reports Reuters.

In a statement made on Thursday, the director of operations and emergencies for the International Organisation of Migration, Mohammed Abdiker, said,

“We urge the international community to step up humanitarian support and come up with help.”

On Wednesday, the UN Secretary General Antonia Guterres urged Myanmar to end what he described as ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya people.

The IOM director of operations warned that the total amount oif people fleeing to Bangladesh could reach up to 700,000, adding,

“The international community has to support to ensure their return peacefully and with safety.”
