Families of the missing persons, who have been on a rotational hunger strike in Vavuniya, reached their 1500thday of protest on Sunday.
Following special worships at the Kandasamy Temple in Vavuniya, protesters rallied on Sunday morning chanting “We want justice!” and “Where are our children who were handed over in Omanthai?”.
Protesters carried flags of the European Union and Britain, pleading these nations for justice. Last week, the UNHRC passed a resolution against Sri Lanka which called for the gathering of evidence for a further war crimes tribunal but failed to incorporate the unified demands of Tamil victims, politicians and civil society groups. Namely, the International Criminal Court (ICC) referral and the establishment of an Independent International Investigative Mechanism (IIIM), to investigate and hold the Government of Sri Lanka accountable for the crimes committed in the final phase of the armed struggle in 2009.
