UN peacekeepers warned the UN security council has started to develop contingency plans for the event of widespread violence in Congo, said the UN Secretary General on Tuesday.
Speaking on a report about upcoming elections in Congo, Ban Ki Moon said,
“The (UN peacekeeping mission) MONUSCO is developing contingency plans in the event of widespread violence in the context of the electoral process.”
“I urge the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to respect freedom of expression, assembly and information as fundamental rights that are essential to the conduct of free and fair elections.”
The UN Security Council is due to be briefed by the UN peacekeeping mission on Thursday.
