Sri Lankan president and PM inaugurate World Buddhist Supreme Conference

Sri Lanka’s president and prime minister inaugurated the Seventh Buddhist Summit of the World Buddhist Supreme Conference at Temple Tress in Colombo this week, as the government released a special stamp to mark the occasion.

Some three hundred senior Buddhist monks from 47 countries, such as Myanmar, are in Sri Lanka to attend the summit after Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena requested it be held on the island.

The official Sri Lankan president’s website said Mr Sirisena “expressed his pleasure about the opportunity to host this summit in Sri Lanka where there is a long history nurtured by Buddhism”.

The summit comes as talks continue on a new constitution for Sri Lanka, with both the Sri Lankan president and prime minister reiterating that Buddhism will continue to hold the foremost place on the island.
