Jaffna University students continued their 194km protest walk to Anuradhupura prison for the third day today, garnering support from locals, including schools and businesses, on the route.
The students began a walk to raise awareness and solidarity for Tamil political prisoners who are hunger striking for their release. The hunger strikes are currently being undertaken by detainees in Anuradhapura prison and Colombo’s Magazine prison.
The walkers set off from Mankulam in Mullativu today and aim to reach Vavuniya town by tomorrow. They passed Kilinochchi yesterday.
School students and teachers, locals and civil society have joined the walkers partially as they pass through their areas. Local residents and businesses have also come out in support of the students, providing them food, water and rest stops.
The students also stopped and spent time with families of the disappeared in Kilinochchi yesterday.
