The house of a Tamil local news journalist has been attacked and vandalised by a group of unidentified men in Mannipay, Jaffna.
At least five men on bikes are understood to have ambushed the house of Valampuri newspaper correspondent, I. Rajeskaran, on the evening of Sunday 19th January. The culprits damaged both the main door and gates of the house and fled before anyone could identify them.
Rajeskaran’s house was also subject to vandalism last month, along with another journalist’s house nearby, whom has since relocated with his family out of fear for their safety.
A complaint has been submitted, to launch an investigation into the incident, with Mannipay Police.
The safety of Tamil journalists and media personnel operating in the North-East has increasingly come under threat since Gotabaya Rajapaksa assumed duties as Sri Lankan President, with incidents of harassment and intimidation against Tamil journalists on the rise.
