Sri Lankan army attempts to reoccupy released land in Jaffna

The Sri Lankan army has erected sign boards claiming ownership of private lands in Kankesanthurai (KKS) which were released to the owners in 2018 after 27 years of occupation as a 'high security zone' (HSZ).

The boards, which read 'unnecessary intrusions into this army controlled area are prohibited', appeared overnight at properties belonging to ten different families.

The owners had cleared the lands after they were released but had not yet resettled on it. The local divisional council had also improved the roads in the area after they were released from army occupation.

S. Sajeevan, the Valikamam North divisional council member responsible for resettlement said he would seek an urgent meeting with the divisional secretary regarding the incursions.
