Israel’s bombardment of Gaza follows a police crackdown on the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound during Ramadan and the threat of forced expulsions of Palestinians from their homes in occupied East Jerusalem. Hamas, the militant group that controls the Gaza Strip, issued Israel a deadline to halt the crackdowns but this was unheeded. Hamas responded by firing rockets towards Israel and Israel launching an intensive bombing campaign on Gaza.
Israel launched more than 1,000 air and artillery strikes which it claims were aimed at Hamas and other military targets however Save the Children have reported that these strikes have hit 31 schools attended by 24,000 children and a health facility in Gaza. Israeli airstrikes have also destroyed a 12-storey building in Gaza City that had housed the US agency Associated Press and Qatar-based Al Jazeera media operations.
Israeli officials have reported the deaths of 10 Israelis, including two children.
