TNPF members launch palmyrah tree planting programme to mark Maaveerar week

Members of the Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) have launched a palmyrah tree planting programme to commemorate Maaveerar week, with the aim of planting 100,000 Palmyra seeds in Jaffna.

The environmental branch of the TNPF launched the programme today amidst an intensifying crackdown in the North-East.

In recent weeks, Sri Lankan security forces have set up new checkpoints in the North-East, particularly in Mullaitivu, in the lead up to Maaveerar Naal, the Tamil national remembrance day for fallen Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres.

The roadblock style checkpoints have been set up alongside a series of court bans which have been imposed over the last week, ordering Tamil activists and politicians not to hold or participate in Maaveerar Naal remembrance events.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
