Cricketer Murali criticised for remarks to Cameron

The Sri Lankan Cricker Muralitharan was criticised by members of the Chaavakachcheri Urban Council on Thursday for his comments to the British Premier David Cameron, asserting that reconciliation was well under way.

Passing a resolution, Councillor P Sritharan, said,
“Perhaps, Muralitharan was playing cricket overseas when the Tamil people in the North were suffering and scores of young men and women disappeared. He has hurt the feelings of the Tamil people, grieving the loss of their loved ones, by undermining their struggles.”
“Hereafter, we will protest if he held cricket training camps in the North and the East.”

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
