Australian FM to visit Sri Lanka and ‘discuss progress on reconciliation’

Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced that she will be visiting Sri Lanka later this month where she will hold talks with government leaders.

In a press release on Monday, Ms Bishop said she will meet with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena to “discuss progress on the implementation of Sri Lanka's reconciliation process, which is critical to its long-term security and prosperity”.

She is also set to meet with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake and other ministers “to discuss security cooperation and explore new economic opportunities in science, resources and energy”.

Her visit comes after HMAS ‘Arunta’, an Anzac-Class frigate vessel of the Royal Australian Navy, arrived in Colombo last week on a four day visit to the island.

The Sri Lankan navy announced that Australian troops would take part in “passage exercises, friendly sport events and several cultural programmes, organized by the Sri Lanka Navy to enhance mutual relations and interactions”.
