Abortion and LGBT rights will not be legalised in Sri Lanka – Minister

A Sri Lankan government minister said LGBT rights and the right to have an abortion would not be allowed in Sri Lanka, and claimed to have reassurances that they would not be introduced from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Tourism and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga said that both he and the prime minister would ensure such rights would not be introduced.

Colombo Gazette reported the minister as stating that on abortion rights, “even if the cabinet considers it, both he and the Prime Minister will strongly oppose it”. He confirmed the new constitution would also not introduce any LGBT rights.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
