US grants $1.2m to counter trafficking in Sri Lanka

The US government is to award $1.2 million to Sri Lanka over three years towards countering human trafficking.

“The United States has a strong commitment to working with international partners to tackle the root causes of modern slavery and protect victims and vulnerable populations.  Through the EQUIP project, we will continue to support the government of Sri Lanka in combating the scourge of human trafficking," the US ambassador to Sri Lanka, Atul Keshap said.

The US Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs will award the new project “Equipping Sri Lanka to Counter Trafficking in Persons (EQUIP)” to the International Labor Organization (ILO) Country Office for Sri Lanka and Maldives, the US said in a statement.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
