Sri Lanka's Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne this week condemned Sinhala people responsible for attacking Muslims in Kandy, saying they were traitors for attacking the Muslim community who helped the military in the fight against the LTTE.
Praising the Muslim community for providing intelligence to the Sri Lankan military, Admiral Wijegunaratne said, "we are living today thanks to them, because as you all know our intelligence during our conflict time was entirely run by our Muslim community."
"In the military we have the highest regard for them. They sacrificed their lives, they went with us in the long range patrols to the LTTE areas. They were fluent in the language and they protected us."
"So all these people, so called Sinhalese, who are doing this damage to our Muslim brothers, I think they are traitors. As far as I am concerned they are traitors, because this community was always with us and they protected us."
"Today even in Kandy, people walk freely without any bombs or anything going up set by the LTTE, thanks to the Muslim community members who were in the armed forces who helped, especially in the intelligence work."
"I don't need to mention the names, who know the names. And that is why they were targetted by the LTTE during the conflict."
"I am very sad as a professional military man at the way we behave in this situation."
