European Union ambassadors this week visited Kandy, the site of anti-Muslim attacks by Sinhala mobs earlier this month, and reiterated the importance of making sure Sri Lanka addresses religious and ethnic hatred.
Meeting with senior Buddhist monks of the Asigiriya chapter and the Malwatte chapter, the ambassadors "emphasised the importance of starting a systematic dialogue with other religious leaders to avoid the recurrence of recent violence."
In a statement, the EU said the Ambassador of the European Union, Tung-Lai Margue, the Ambassador of Romania, Dr Victor Chiujdea, and Heinz Walker-Nederkoom, the Ambassador of Switzerland, had also met with representatives of the Muslim community to discuss the recent communal violence and its aftermath.
"The violence in Kandy underscores the need to redouble efforts to support national reconciliation," the statement added.
