Social media becoming 'disruptive force' - Sri Lankan PM

Sri Lanka's prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Thursday said that social media was becoming a disruptive force globally.

“The new media including social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and other websites are becoming global disruptive forces. We have seen the potential of this new media to de-establish nations and affect series of changes,” he was quoted by Colombo papers as saying whilst speaking at the Colombo Defence Seminar, organised by the Sri Lankan military.

“The nature of warfare are shifting from physical to online, or into the increased use of computers electromagnetism and artificial intelligence in commercial, economic, military and all other cutting-edge activities,” he added.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view

We need your support in keeping our journalism going. Support our work today.
