A Sri Lankan solider was caught stealing cash from a Tamil shop in Mullaitivu.
The soldier, attached to the 59 brigade, was captured on the shop’s CCTV on Saturday taking notes out of a cash box and putting them in his pocket.
The owner of the shop used the CCTV footage as evidence to identify and report the soldier to military police.
Following his report, military intelligence officers visited the shop and told the owner, a former LTTE cadre, that the army would investigate and punish the soldier and that his cash would be returned.
The intelligence officers warned the owner not to publicise the incident or send the footage to media, warning “you will see what happens if you do”.
However the owner stated that the cash has not been returned as of yet and he had not been informed of any action taken.
