Pongal is a time to ‘remember sacrifices made by Tamils for justice’ – Labour leader

The leader of the UK Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn thanked the British Tamil community and commemorated “sacrifices made by the Tamil people for their human rights, for peace and for justice in Sri Lanka” in a message to mark Thai Pongal this morning.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Tamil community in the UK for the many important contributions it’s made and continues to make all over the country,” said the video messaged released by the Labour leader.

He went on to add,

“Pongal is also a time for us to remember the sacrifices made by the Tamil people for their human rights, for peace and for justice in Sri Lanka. Your community and your families have suffered immensely and you deserve answers so that we can ensure the atrocities you have endured never happen again.

And that’s why I’m deeply concerned that the new Government of Sri Lanka has said it will not implement the vital UN resolution on accountability, justice and reconciliation.

Labour will always stand by the Tamil people, wherever they may be, in their pursuit of true peace and justice.”

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
