Students at the University of Jaffna raised black flags across campus this morning, as Tamils across the North-East marked Sri Lanka’s Independence Day as a day of protest.
A banner erected by the main campus gate said the day was a “black day for the Tamil nation”, with the Jaffna University Students’ Union extending its “full support to the struggle of the Tamil people in the North-East”.
The students also called for the Prevention of Terrorism Act to be lifted, an international inquiry into the issue of forcible disappearances and for Sri Lanka to be referred to the International Criminal Court.
