Mulliyavalai Youth Club association members set up a free home gardening initiative, with the Institute of Regional Development and Governance, for Mulliyavalai area residents.
The project called “Namakku Naamay” (We For Us), was launched by the youths on Thursday (9th March) to ensure that every household has plants in their home’s garden, in an effort to prepare for the impending food crisis and poverty looming in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The youth members hope this initiative will set an example to other youths and people in the North East, as they also plan to roll out and expand the initiative across the Mullaitivu district.
Mullaitivu Development Committee Chairman and former parliamentarian, Sathasivam Kanagaratnam; Mulliyavalai Kalaimagal Art School President, Kamalakanthan; Mulliyavalai Tamil School President Mohanathas and Dr. Papojeevan were among those to receive a visit from the youths to put plants in their gardens.
The youths emphasise that this initiative will allow locals to benefit from having clean, organic and nutritious vegetables from the comfort of their own home, and also prove to be a greatly useful hobby.
Earlier this week, Varatharajah Parthiban, a member of Jaffna Municipal Council also helped distribute vegetable and herbs to people to grow in their homes during the curfew, as Tamils look to help each other during the testing times of the pandemic with the Sri Lanka government offering little to no support to those in need.
