Despite efforts by Sri Lankan authorities to halt remembrance efforts today, Tamils across the North-East lit flames and laid flowers to commemorate the tens of thousands who were massacred by the Sri Lankan state eleven years ago.
In Mullivaikkal this morning, Tamils lit flames at the main commemoration site where a ceremony was held.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lankan public health inspectors had come to the site.
Several checkpoints have been set up in and around Mullivaikkal by the Sri Lankan police and military, in recent days with an intelligence presence there since this morning.
