The Sri Lankan navy’s efforts to occupy private land in Karainagar, Jaffna was thwarted by the protests of Tamil locals and politicians, last Friday (19th February).
A sit-in protest to block the Land Survey Department from entering the privately owned land in the Nilankadu area of Karainagar, Jaffna was carried out by the local Tamil landowners and politicians.
The Sri Lankan navy identified 50 acres of land belonging to 67 separate landowners to be seized for their own use.
Demonstrators mobilised in the streets and expressed their strong objection against the private lands being seized and prevented the land survey department from entering the land. As a result of the resistance, the officials from the Land Survey Department was forced from entering and had to vacate the area.
