Mullaitivu locals carried out a demonstration, as part of an island-wide protest against deforestation.
The protest was held on Tuesday in front of the Vidyananda College in Mulliyavalai, with demonstrators demanding halting of cutting trees and preventing unforeseeable changes to the environment.
The anti-deforestation movement made several demands including the termination of the elimination of forest cover and making positive intervention to save the lives of forest animals, particularly elephants. 65 elephants have reportedly died so far in 2021.
Protestors also demanded a stop to the enduring harassment of students and young climate activists and emphasised the importance of freedom to express their genuine concerns.
The protesters held placards depicting the consequences of deforestation and phrases such as “stop ecocide” and “save our planet."
