Heavy rain in Mannar has led to devastating flooding which has affected more than 25,000 people across the district of Mannar.
The Mannar district disaster management division stated that 26,519 people across Mannar had been affected by flooding caused by heavy rain on Sunday. 1380 people have been displaced by the flooding and are currently staying in emergency camps. Villages in Thalaimannar, Pesalai, Thottaveli and urban areas in Mannar were all flooded.
The flooding has inundated the main road in Talaimannar, bringing traffic to a standstill. Mannar's district governor had instructed to Road Development Authority to carry out repair works, temporary transport services are being provided whilst the road remains closed.
The heavy rain has also exacerbated already flooded paddy fields, leading to the destruction of 17,167 acres of paddy cultivation. A. Merin Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Mannar district agrarian department stated that continuous rain had affected 5555 acres in Manthai West Divisional Secretariat, 2400 acres in Musali Divisional Secretariat, 4345 acres in Nanattan Divisional Secretariat, 825 acres in Madhu Divisional Secretariat and 4042 acres in Mannar urban divisional secretariat.
