Mangala Maddumage, a national organiser of the Revolutionary Students Union was reportedly abducted by unidentified men in a three wheeler in Colombo, as the crackdown on anti-government protesters continues across the South.
According to Journalists for Democracy in Sri Lanka (JDS), Sri Lankan police have confirmed that Maddumage is now being held at Colombo Crime Division in Bamabalapitiya.
This is the latest in a series of arrests that have taken place across the South. The abduction took place just hours after Ceylon Teachers' Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin was released on bail after being arrested last week for participating in anti-government protests as the island deals with a worsening economic crisis.
Speaking to reporters after his release, Stalin reportedly said that "the aim of the clampdown on trade unions, students & mass organisations is to cow us into submission. We won’t be scared & struggle will go on."
Protests took place last week demanding the release of Stalin and other anti-government protesters who participated in demonstrations demanding the resignation of former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
