Mullaitivu fishermen demand fuel and an end to illegal fishing

Hundreds of Tamil fishermen rallied through Mullaitivu this week, as they demanded an end to illegal fishing by Indian trawlers and support with a crippling fuel shortage that has left many livelihoods at risk.

The protest on Tuesday by the Mullaitivu Fishermen's Federation saw boats loaded on trucks and marched through the town.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has left a fuel shortage that has ground key industries such as fishing to a halt in the North-East. Even kerosene has been in short supply, with thousands of livelihoods impacted across the Tamil homeland.

The fishermen called on the local government to ensure that kerosene was subsidised and provided to those in need, and also complained of Indian trawlers that have been illegally fishing in waters off the Mullaitivu coast.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
