Solheim meets 'two old friends'

The former Norwegian peace envoy to Sri Lanka Erik Solheim met Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians M A Sumanthiran and R Shanakiyan in Colombo yesterday.

Stating that the two were “old friends” of his, Solheim said they had an “sxciting discussion on the way forward for Sri Lanka - economic recovery, green developments and political reform”.

The meeting comes after Soheim was named “International Climate Adviser” to current Sri Lankan president Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Solheim also met with former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa, a man who stands accused of overseeing war crimes that Solhiem said he would be willing to give evidence on before an international court.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
