Sri Lanka’s president orders for the end of land grabs- PLOTE leader claims

Leader of the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), Dharmalingam Siddarthan, has claimed that Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered for the immediate halting of land grabs in the North and East.

The reported order follows meetings between the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Sri Lanka’s president, during which the TNA pushed for the release of Tamil land seized by the Sri Lankan government and military and for the release of Tamil political prisoners.

Siddarthan has also claimed that Wickremesinghe has moved for the release of Tamil political prisoners and reportedly called on military officers to discuss their occupation of land in the North and East.

Earlier this week, TNA politician MA Sumanthiran maintained that the TNA were reconsidering their strategy of engagement with the Sri Lankan government given the lack of tangible progress.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
