Muslims in Trincomalee say no to genocide in Gaza

Thousands of Muslims gathered at the Kinniya Urban Council Grounds in Trincomalee to hold a mass protest and collective prayer in solidarity with Palestine on Friday.

A large Sri Lankan flag was waved, alongside a Palestinian one.

“Condemnation of Western media propaganda against Hamas,” read one placard at the protest, which also involved a march organised by the Muhideen Central Jummah Mosque.

The rally comes alongside others that have been held across the island. Whilst many have been in support of Palestine and denouncing the bombardment of Gaza, one group of Sinhala Buddhist monks marched in support of Israel.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
