Students and family members gathered to remember the Ayyankkulam massacre in Mullaitivu, where 6 students and 2 healthcare workers were killed by the Sri Lankan army.
On November 27, 2007, 8 people, including six students and two staff, were killed in a claymore attack on an ambulance by the Sri Lankan army Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) in Ayyankulam area of Mullaitivu.
Due to this attack by the army, the schoolgirls Nagaratnam Pradeepa (16), Nagaratnam Madikaran (15), Nithyanandhan Nidarsana (13), Karunakaran Kausika (15), Chandrasekharam Tiroja (16) Aumurasha Ajitnath (17) and health workers Sanmugavadivel Sagunthaladevi (19) and Marimuthu Krishnaveni (21) were killed.
The father of one of the girls that was killed in the attack lit the main flame while flowers and sweets were laid infront of portraits of the victims.
The commemoration took place amidst the heavy presence of the Sri Lankan military and police who had been clamping down on Maaveerar Naal remembrance events in Mullaitivu.
