Former Northern Province Chief Minister and Leader of the Tamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani (TMTK) party, C.V. Wigneswaran, has publicly announced his intention to contest the upcoming Presidential election.
During the press conference, he emphasised that his candidacy hinged upon the unity and agreement of all Tamil political parties.
"I believe I am the best candidate if a common Tamil candidate is to be put forward," he asserted, highlighting the need for timely representation.
He further noted that his bid would have a serious impact on Sinhala candidates hoping to secure a majority of the votes.
Wigneswaran has been critical of President Ranil Wickremesinghe, citing unmet promises made during discussions with Tamil politicians. Notably, he declined an invitation to participate in the December 21 dialogue between Wickremesinghe and Tamil MPs from the North and East. The refusal was attributed to the ongoing failure to implement the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which outlines provisions for devolution to the North and East.
