Tamils launch petition to hold elected officials to account

In a bid to hold Tamil politicians accountable, Eelam Tamils have launched a signature campaign demanding that promises made by Members of Parliament during the election period be fulfilled.

The program, organized by the National Fisheries Cooperation Movement, was kicked off on Friday in front of the Jaffna Central Bus Station.

During election campaigns, politicians often make pledges and commitments to their constituents, they stated. However, these promises frequently go unfulfilled once they assume office.

This is particularly true in the case of the North-East which continues to lag in terms of development initiatives, despite the many promises made by Tamil politicians. Tamils have taken matters into their own hands by collecting signatures to advocate for legislative action and calls on elected representatives to honour their campaign promises.

The initiative has reportedly gained momentum across 17 districts, with people expressing their frustration and determination to see accountability upheld.
