A new organization, called the North-East Young Fishermen's Association, has been launched in Jaffna this week, with Tamil youth from across the North-East uniting to voice their concerns, formulate policies and advance the rights of fishermen across the homeland.
The association was initiated with the guidance of Mannar Social and Economic Development Organization (MSEDO) with youth from all seven districts attending the event.
During the initial event, the rights of fishermen, how their livelihoods can be better protected, social safety nets and how these youths call rally around for their rights was discussed and plans were drawn up.
The launch of the new organisation comes as Sri Lankan military occupation and the intrusion of Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu with trawlers has negatively impacted on the livelihoods of Eelam Tamil fisherfolk.
