Sumanthiran expresses gratitude for Namal Rajapaksa’s support for the North-East

Ahead of Sri Lanka’s presidential election, Tamil lawmaker M.A. Sumanthiran met with candidate for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party, Namal Rajapaksa, to discuss issues facing the North-East.

The SLPP’s Politbureau member, G. Cassilingham told reporters that Namal Rajapaksa had claimed he was willing to address the grievances of those in the North-East and provide a better livelihood.

Tamils in Trincomalee remembered the victims of the Thiriyai massacre in which 12 Tamils were shot by Sri Lanka's security forces 39 years ago and called for the perpertrators to be held accountable. 

The families marked the massacre with a memorial, prayers, and floral tributes. 

Over 100 killed in Israeli attack on Gaza school

More than 100 Palestinians have been killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people in Gaza City, according to officials in the enclave.

Three Israeli bombs hit al-Tabin school, located in the Daraj district, Gaza’s civil defence agency said of the attack on Saturday, which it described as a “horrific massacre”.

Myanmar rebels seize regional military base from junta

The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) said it had taken the strategic city of Lashio in northern Shan State, about 120 km (75 miles) from the Chinese border, after 23 days of fighting with government troops.

3rd August to 9th August Occupation Watch  

Commander of Security force Wanni Major General J.P.C. Peris RWP RSP ndc visited the home of the Bishop of Mannar Reverend Dr. Fidelis Lionel Emmanuel Fernando on the 3rd of August. Subsequently he attended the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, where he met with Reverend Father P. Gnanpragasam of Madu Church. The commander discussed the upcoming Madhu Feast, and security measures concerning the event.
