Jaffna Uni students mark LTTE leader's birthday in secret

Students at the University of Jaffna marked the birthday of LTTE leader Veluppillai Prabhakaran in secret at midnight.

Last year, posters featuring the leader's quotes and photos were displayed around the campus.

This year however an increased security force is still in place since the Easter Sunday bombings, following which Tamil students were arrested on unrelated charges.

Students still decided to go ahead with the secret birthday celebration, but were also mindful of arrests made last year of Tamils who had openly done the same.

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
