  • SL lifts travel advisory on Tamil Nadu

Sri Lanka lifted its travel advisory against travel to Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

The ban was instigated citing attacks against Sri Lankan pilgrims in Tamil Nadu.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said:

“Following a series of unfortunate incidents faced by Sri Lankans visiting Tamil Nadu, in particular a group of Sri Lankan pilgrims visiting the Poornimatha Church in Thanjavur in early September 2012, the Government of Sri Lanka was compelled to issue a travel advisory for Sri Lankan nationals visiting the state of Tamil Nadu.

The Government of Sri Lanka views these incidents as an aberration, and acknowledges that Sri Lanka nationals numbering approximately 200,000 who visit India every year are received warmly in India, including in Tamil Nadu.

The Government of Sri Lanka is pleased that the Government of India, in close consultation with the concerned state governments, has taken and will continue to take all measures to ensure the safety, security and wellbeing of Sri Lankan dignitaries and visitors to all parts of India including Tamil Nadu.

People-to-people contact plays an important role in the multifaceted India-Sri Lanka relationship, especially in further promoting historical, cultural and political ties as well as economic and business relations.  The Government of Sri Lanka is of the view that this age-old natural process of interaction between our two peoples must flourish, unhindered.

In this context, the Government of Sri Lanka appreciates the comment made by the Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu that the state government of Tamil Nadu is determined to ensure that Sri Lankan visitors to Tamil Nadu are not harmed in any way.

The Government of Sri Lanka has received a large number of requests to lift the Travel Advisory. The Government of Sri Lanka believes that the Travel Advisory is no longer required.”

Ms A Sinnapillai was gagged and dragged out of her home by two Sinhalese workers and allegedly raped and murdered in a nearby jungle. Her body was found dumped upside down in a pit.

Staff at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital were suspicious of the injuries on the victim’s body which was sent to a Colombo hospital for further medical examination. However the Batticaloa staff told TamilNet of the reluctance of Colombo’s medical authorities in issuing medical reports confirming rape.

In another case, villagers caught a Sinhalese worker attempting to assault a 17 year old girl on Thursday.

The man was taken to the Chairman of the Piradeshiya Sabha, who is reportedly a member of Pillayan’s paramilitary group, whereupon the policemen acting as security allowed the suspect to walk away uncharged.

A large number of Sinhalese workers from the South have been deployed in construction and infrastructure works in the East, while unemployment among Tamil youths remains high in the Batticaloa province.

“We recognise the potential that Malaysian oil and gas companies could offer Sri Lankan companies in this sector.

Saliya Wickramasuriya, Director General of the PRDS said,

“Malaysia has demonstrated that their home grown companies have the capabilities to move out from their domestic markets and to venture into the international arena, where they are now credible and reputable in the oil and gas sector.

  • Tamils accused of 'conspiring' with diaspora to be prosecuted
Around 80 Tamils are to face prosecution by the Sri Lankan state after being accused of conspiring with activists in the country and in the diaspora to set up a separate state.

These Tamils are accused of being “hardcore LTTE cadres” and will be prosecuted under the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act according to Additional Solicitor General Suhada Gamlath.

    He told the Daily Mirror,
“The TID has gathered reliable information that these LTTE cadres have been in contact with LTTE activists and the Tamil Diaspora who are conspiring set up a transnational state of Tamil Eelam"
Gamlath went on to say that it was during the Vavuniya prison riots in June, where Tamil prisoners were attacked and killed by security forces, that the activities of these prisoners were ‘discovered’.

He also acknowledged that the international community is watching Sri Lanka’s actions on political prisoners, commenting,

A senior judge, openly critical of the Sri Lankan government, has been admitted to hospital after being stabbed several times.

Tilakaratne recently issued a statement outlining the targeting and intimidation that the JSC was facing. He said,
“the main objective of those behind the conspiracy, is to destroy the independence of the judiciary and rule of law.”
The attack comes shortly after several lawyers associations passed a resolution condemning the intimidation of the JLC.

    The societies further stated,
“Although there has been a need in this post-war period to carry out civil society services for people caught in the war, the Sri Lankan government has only hindered this work.”

“The Sri Lankan government continues to carry out a campaign of ethnic cleansing. It has planned to carry out this genocide in various forms.”

“Native Tamil lands are being hijacked by the army. Much the land of the Tamil people has been grabbed as ‘high security zones’. Sinhalese settlement programs are modifying the ethnic demographics of the region.”

“Tamil people’s language rights are being ignored. There is increasing political interference in the administration of justice.”

“We will now try to walk on our own feet. Che Guevara once said that our enemy determines the weapon we choose. But for Tamil people, the arms we will take up next will be determined by the international community. Tamil people are not prepared to trust the Sri Lankan state.

“The Tamil people are not satisfied with the findings of Sri Lanka’s LLRC report. However we welcome the implementation of certain recommendations.”

The Sri Lankan army is “very happy” by the display of its own man in the Sri Lankan cricket team.

2nd Lieutenant Ajantha Mendis produced two of the best ever spells of Twenty20 cricket during Sri Lanka’s match against Zimbabwe.

"Mendis is our man and he has made us proud,” said an army officer to a gulfnews.com reporter.

He is also said to have remarked that he had worked with Mendis in the army.

“It was the Sri Lankan Army that noticed Mendis’s talent and groomed him to be a top cricketer. In a match against the army’s under-23 team, Mendis produced a great spell and that was his turning point. The Sri Lankan Army gave him a job,” he said.

Mendis was on active duty during the armed conflict with the LTTE, as part of the same Sri Lankan Army that stands accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Having moved on from the battlefield, he now plays cricket around the world, including against England last week at the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, which ended today with a loss of the hosts to the West Indies.

  • Visa refusal for Tamil refugee overturned in Australia
An Australian court has overturned the decision by the Australia Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) to withhold a visa for an asylum seeker on the grounds he was a  'security risk', despite being considered at risk of persecution and deemed eligible for asylum.

The court ruled that the withholding of the visas in such circumstances was "invalid" and  ''had not been made according to law''.

The ruling is said to have considerable significance in the cases of over 50 asylum seekers in a similar position.
